Pompeii Express or Pompei+: which one do you need

Express or Plus
Pompeii Express covers the ancient city within the walls, including the Forum, the houses, the baths, and the Amphitheatre. Pompei+ adds the suburban villas — Villa dei Misteri, Villa of Diomedes, and Villa Regina in Boscoreale with the Antiquarium. If you're only in Pompeii for a few hours, the Express is the right choice.

What actually changes

The main sights don’t change: they’re all in the Express. What changes is the area. With Pompei+ you exit through the western gate and reach Villa dei Misteri, the house with the fresco cycle everyone’s seen in photos, and Villa di Diomede; then, if you still have energy, there’s Villa Regina in Boscoreale with its Antiquarium, and the easiest access there is from Piazza Esedra.

It’s a numbers game. The site covers 44 hectares and visitors spend an average of two or three hours inside. With that time budget, the Forum, Casa del Fauno and the Amphitheatre take it all, and the villas stay on the map. Do the math with how much time you really need before buying more than you can walk.

What works

  • The Express covers everything you come to Pompeii for
  • It costs less and doesn’t leave you feeling you *have* to see the rest
  • The Pompeii+ makes sense for a second visit, or if you have a full day
  • The Villa dei Misteri is the only part of the Plus that almost everyone regrets missing

Before you go

  • With the Plus you walk a lot more, in the sun
  • Boscoreale is another stop—it’s not just around the corner
  • If you arrive in the afternoon in winter, you won’t make it: it closes at 17:00
  • Neither includes a guide—that’s a separate choice

Who needs the Plus

Anyone visiting Pompeii for a second time. Anyone with a full day who arrives at 9:00. Anyone who came specifically for Roman painting and won’t leave without seeing the Dionysian cycle at Villa dei Misteri. For everyone else, the Express is the straightforward choice: if you want to see how it fits with a guide or audio guide, check out which ticket to choose.

Frequently asked questions

Is Villa dei Misteri included in the basic ticket?

No: it’s outside the walls and included in Pompei+, not Pompei Express. If it’s a must-see, go for the Plus and factor in the walk.

Is Pompei+ worth it for a half-day visit?

Usually not. A half-day is plenty to explore the ancient city, and the villas are a great reason to come back. See how much time you need.

Does Pompei+ let me skip the line?

No, they’re two different things: the ticket type determines what you can visit, while priority access depends on the option you book. I cover this in booking ahead.
